Adana Intensive Programme
This IP was planned and discussed by members of CLIOHnet’s plenary meeting which held on in Bergen University in Norway at the end of 2006. CLIOHnet is a Socrates-Erasmus Thematic Network formed to address the task of bringing a critically founded historical perspective to bear on the challenges facing European society and education today. Its name stands "Creating Links and Innovative Overviews to Enhance Historical Perspective in European Culture". Both as a research area and as a subject widely taught and studied in Universities and schools at all levels, history is undergoing a rapid transformation, often perceived as a crisis. The Network utilises the remarkable opportunities created by the swift expansion of contact between diverse European cultural and educational traditions to bring a supranational, diachronic and comparative approach to the study and teaching of history. CLIOHnet works on a variety of levels. In this IP the geographically distribution of the members has been taken into consideration.
The IP has been the general objective project to develop novel ways of teaching history, thereby enhancing a common identity of the Europeans. One of the main obstacles in this respect is the fact that politics and history teaching is still in most cases national in its orientation, emphasizing the nation-state as the appropriate frame of reference for the identity of European citizens. Thus, it is imperative to analyze how the various countries teach the history of a wide variety of themes, e.g. the changing relationship between religion and the state, between decision makers and state systems, between religion and cultural/linguistic identities, between religion and education, between religion, gender and family politics etc., if the history curriculum is to be developed beyond these boundaries.
Cukurova University wrote its European Policy Statement (EPS) in 2003. The EPS of the Cukurova University mainly addresses some priority areas: gender and equal opportunities issues; racism and ethnicity; the use of ODL and ICT in achieving a innovative perspective; teaching/learning for all age levels on societies – as LLL -level; the broadening of the scientific community all over the world and neighbouring space to include all Europe and Middle East, Central Asian, Caucassian, Black Sea and Mediterranean countries.
The primary aim of the IP is to create a context and learning situation which puts students and professors from different universities and countries into contact with the differing national historiographic and didactic traditions, dealing at the same time with certain key concepts in the social, political and cultural history. The second aim is on the basis of the materials presented in the IP and the discussions generated, to produce a collection of didactic materials on the religion and political change in the various parts of Europe which can be used in all participating Universities and offered for use in other Universities and schools. A more general aim is to support the democratic process in Europe by forwarding and informed debate on the question of culture, religion and political change.
The basic pedagogic approach is that of active learning; that is, learning through direct experience in a collaborative situation, carefully prepared for beforehand, in a European context. The preparation carried out in the regular courses during the year will make it possible to realize the actual IP for maximum effect in the planned ten days period. Each of the mornings will be organized around themes within a theoretical, chronological and/or geographical framework. The afternoons participants will be distributed in work groups to discuss and compare the morning's work with the material prepared by others in response to the same framework of questions. Groups will prepare responses on specific themes. Materials will be collected and used as a source for writing a collection of teaching materials on various specific themes.
The IP is directly linked with the existing teaching programmes of the participating institutions. These are first of all, but not exclusively, the courses taught by the professors who will actually be present at the IP. These courses form, as the IP itself, an integral part of the “CLIOHnet” project.
The target audience is primarily the students of the participating universities, represented by the students actually present at the IP. The students involved will come from the humanities, the social and political sciences principally. Another important target audience is of course the teaching staff itself, the IP being part of the activities of a curriculum development project.
Each participant university has a place for one or two students, except for the University of Cukurova, which may select more students, as this will not increase the costs. The coordinators of each university will select the student(s) representing his or her institution. The IP was announced at the CLIOHnet Plenary Meeting in Bergen in Norway at the end of 2006 in order that all participating Universities can announce their participation. Applicants will be interviewed by the CLIOHnet Coordinators and their applications forwarded to the IP Coordinator. Deadline will be 15 December 2007. Selection will be made by Coordinating Committee on 21 December 2007. Each partner university will send one qualified candidate and any other qualified candidates will be placed on the waiting list in case not all places are taken.
